The Flower Basket opened in 1972 with customer service as the foundation of the business. Third generation funeral director, Eva Pafford Helms had become increasingly frustrated because, "People can't always choose when they're going to need flowers," she said. Daughter, Dian Helms Brown remembers, "She said we'd open anytime anyone needs flowers."

In the 16 years that Dian and Eva operated the business together, they enjoyed relationships throughout the local area and across the country. Eva, who passed away in 1989, was the first woman to serve on the Tennessee State Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers. Dian traveled to 27 states and several foreign countries, teaching floral technique. She worked with floral design teams in three U.S. presidential inaugurations and for the rededication of the Statue of Liberty in New York. Her articles and designs have been featured in industry publications.

Just as products, styles and tastes have changed in the 32 years since its beginning, the shop now known as An Original Flower Basket and its web presence of Flowersmart.com, have changed to meet the needs of our busy customers. "We eliminated the large storefront, holding overhead to a minimum. That lets us give more value in each arrangement," Dian said. "Our customers appreciate our toll-free number because when they travel for work or pleasure they can call us to send flowers in Lexington, Jackson, and surrounding areas as well as around the world. We answer our phone after hours and on weekends and holidays."

We'll make you proud to send flowers. 877-968-8141 or 731-968-8141

Money Magazine says Florist Flowers are Best Buy!
Splurge on flowers from a florist! That's the message in an article in the September issue of Money Magazine that guides readers on whether to 'save or splurge' on items ranging from televisions, to blinds, to flowers.

The article quotes Amy Stewart, who says "Grocery stores and florists don't generally sell the same quality of flowers, and they don't handle them the same way."

The article goes on to explain the economics behind that notion: "Because plants are their main source of revenue, florists are more lakely to keep their inventory at the right temperature (near freezing is best), frequently change the water and periodically recut stems...All these steps keep the blooms alive longer." The article likewise warns against supermarket flowers that are placed adjacent to produce: "The fruit gives off ethylene, which wilts plants."
